Over the next few weeks, hundreds of backpackers will be starting their northward journey to Maine from Springer Mountain in northern Georgia.  Many have been planning for years, and quite a few have started blogs to share their adventure.  Below are a few links that I’ve come across to hike vicariously through them.  It’s a good way to get a feel for the adventure and the trials along the way.  Enjoy.

Today, MetroJacksonville has a good article on Ft. Caroline and the surrounding natural and historical attractions – many of which have been mentioned or detailed here.  It’s worth a look, and provides some more information on the Theodore Roosevelt nature area, Spanish Pond, and even the gravestone of John Nathan Spearing.  If you ever get the chance, take a day to make it out to this area and see the sights.  They’re literally right across the street from each other.  In the meantime, read the article here.

No one ever said it would be easy to crack the biggest mystery of Fort Caroline: Where is the exact location of the isolated, blood-soaked outpost of the doomed French expedition to the New World?

People have looked for it over the years. But it’s as if it has just vanished, as if there never were that tenuous foothold somewhere on the banks of the St. Johns River.

Still, a team of University of North Florida archaeologists and students kept up the search on Friday, plunging into palmetto thickets, digging through ancient oyster shells, sifting through the thin soil near Spanish Pond, deep inside the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. (more…)
